Your body is always trying to heal

May 26, 2025

Hello friends,
I’m sure all of you have been in a situation where it was just pretty rough. Your mind was spiraling and thinking this would last forever and how would you ever get out of it. Deep down there is a part of you that knows you will because there is evidence that you always have other times. But then there’s this louder part of you that thinks this must be the time you don’t. This is the time you die to put it bluntly. This is the time it all goes south and there is no way out. All joy is lost. All health is lost this time. The spiral is pretty depressing and feels endlessly hopeless.

Sometimes we aren’t even so aware this is how we are thinking. We are just struggling and subconsciously feeling very stuck. It also feel like something big needs to happen or will happen to get out of this.

Did you know this is another one of the tricks of your survival brain? Making it feel like you need to do something big to get out. Something drastic, the only way out is by ending up at the hospital or by having something horrible happen or there is no way out all together? And to give up and despair is the only answer. Your survival brain is so very focused on survival, your rational thinking brain (prefrontal cortex) isn’t online at all. This part of your brain is responsible for rational thinking and being able to compartmentalize, and find solutions and think from a place of possibilities, to name a few.

This last week I came face to face with the flu of the year. It had been 18 years since I spent 7 hours throwing up every 30 minutes roughly. I knew I would get through this but when I was in the thick of it, I nearly began to wonder. When would this end? But guess what, it did! Now here we are back to work and living life again.

In that time of illness what helps so very much is if we can keep our parts of our brain in the right order. I know that sounds like I am sorting laundry or directing traffic but that isn’t that far off. To have the proper understanding of what is survival, what is truth and rational, and to keep the curious observer in the forefront of our thoughts can help us immensely. When we have tools to show our survival brain those irrational thoughts of doom and gloom are not fact, it can even help us heal. When we are in a dark place of fear and worry it only inhibits our body’s ability to heal. When we lack the understanding of how powerful our thought patterns are we are only feeding the illness. The body can not heal properly from a place of survival and fear.

Another factor is to be able to see how resilient the body is vs jumping into fear. Trust me, I’m human and had not had this mega flu for so long. I did have my moments. But the body did its thing, and it is incredible how step by step we heal and got back to normal. Time keeps moving and the body does not stay in the same state. It is always healing or fighting to heal. You get a cut, it start to close up. You cut your hair, your hair starts to grow. Your body was made to heal itself and to change, not stop. Your life, your pathways of thinking, and patterns of coping are is slowing the process of healing or helping it heal. Either way your body is always working towards healing the best it can given the circumstances. We get in the way so very many times.
